A Very Happy New Year to all of you.
It has been my tradition to write a New Year message to all the individuals involved in the organizations that I lead. As the new PIKOM Chairman for the Council year 2017-2018, I am pleased to deliver my first New Year Message to all of you.
Let’s reflect on the year that has past and face this new year with vigour and courage in what it will bring to all of us.
How was 2017 for PIKOM? Well it was certainly quite a productive year for the National ICT Association of Malaysia and for the industry as well.
In March, we saw the exciting launch of the Digital Free Trade Zone - Alibaba’s first regional e-Fulfilment hub outside China - a major boost for the SME sector in Malaysia. In November, nearly 2,000 export-ready SMEs was onboard the DFTZ.
Alibaba founder and Executive Chairman Jack Ma, who is also one of the world's most recognised and influential ICT industry leaders heaped praises on the country’s efforts in moving forward in its Digital agenda.
A significant milestone for PIKOM was organising for the first time #MYCYBERSALE 2017, Malaysia’s biggest online sale event. This was a joint collaboration with MDEC, the event organiser since 2014, which entrusted the association to make it an industry-initiative and private-sector-driven event.
We stepped up to the challenge and the five-day event held in October achieved RM311 million in gross merchandise value, exceeding the target of RM300 million GMV. The event also attracted more than 1,000 online merchants, of which about 50 per cent were exporters. An export revenue of RM39 million GMV, was also achieved, a phenomenal growth of over 254 per cent from the 2016 export revenue of RM11million.
#MYCYBERSALE 2017 was the first major initiative of PIKOM’s E-Commerce Malaysia chapter launched in January.
The online sale event was also a key driver in attracting new members to the association. The membership soared last year, with a majority of new members signing up to be part of the new chapter.
Besides the E-Commerce Chapter, PIKOM also formed the Cybersecurity Chapter and the Venture Investment Chapter to address the needs, concerns and demands of the industry members.
MSC Malaysia APICTA award recipients brought glory to the country by grabbing one Winner and eight merit awards at the International APICTA Awards held in December in Bangladesh.
Some of the award recipients were primary-school children, giving hope and inspiration for the future generation of our country that Malaysian youngsters have the talents and skills to create remarkable tech innovations and stand up tall on the global stage.
The Outsourcing Malaysia chapter formed two decades back, also launched their new OM Southern Office in April in Iskandar Puteri to support the Global Business Services (GBS) industry in the southern region.
Our continuing success is only possible through your continuing support and I therefore invite you to renew your membership for 2018 with PIKOM so that you can be a part of these exciting initiatives we have planned for YOU!
In closing, I wish all of you great success in your endeavours and let’s work together to make 2018 another landmark year for PIKOM, the future of the ICT Industry and for our beloved Country!
