NEW MANDATE TO TAKE PIKOM FORWARD
PIKOM announces the Council line-up for the term 2011/2012

Kuala Lumpur, Friday (October 28, 2011) – PIKOM, the National ICT Association of Malaysia, held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) at the Sime Darby Convention Centre this morning. About 100 members representing all the classes of membership were present at the AGM. PIKOM presented the annual report and financial status to the members during the meeting.

The AGM also saw the passing of the baton from Dato’ Wei Chuan Beng, who has served the maximum two years as Chairman to Woon Tai Hai. Woon had served as Deputy Chairman in the previous term. The Council lineup for 2011/2012 reflected the members desire for continuity and experience.

“I am glad that the AGM proceedings were smooth and conducted in a very cordial and professional manner. The team voted in to serve the members not only have the necessary qualifications and experience but the passion to take PIKOM to the next level.” said Woon.

As PIKOM celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, the association has reached new heights. Its membership base has grown to 1,400 members, regional chapters arer playing an active role in representing PIKOM outside of the Klang Valley, PIKOM at the helm of international organisations eg WITSA (World Information Technology & Services Alliance) and ASSOCIO (Asia-Oceania Regional ICT Association) and the introduction of new events to spur growth and PIKOM’s reach to the user community through the CIO and regional Chapter.

The general economic climate is expected to be challenging moving forward with the uncertainty in Europe. Growth in 2011 has been revised downwards in the region of 4.6% and 2012 will be about 5%. Against this backdrop, the ICT industry will grow about 10% in 2011 which is now about RM50 billion. From the government, Budget 2012 has included a plethora of projects to drive demand including RM51.2 billion of development expenditure. In essence, the Malaysian economy will face some challenges in its journey towards a high income nation namely pace of recovery in the years ahead, reducing the fiscal deficits, attracting FDIs, talent retention/attractions and wages.  The ICT services sector is expected to continue to  play a crucial role in contributing to Malaysia’s aim of achieving high-income status by the year 2020.

“On PIKOM’s side, the association will continue to innovate to cushion any impending slowdown of growth  for the ICT industry. Among some of the plans include the the official launch of the PIKOM ICT Mall which will be the new home for the ICT retail industry, leveraging on the National Key Economic Areas (NKEA) Entry Point Projects (EPPs) on outsourcing and data centres, our focus on knowledge management and research and the internationalising of our events through our network in ASOCIO and WITSA”, added Woon.

The PIKOM Councillors for the 2011/2012 term are:
Dr. Dzaharudin Mansor - Microsoft (M) Sdn Bhd
Mr. Danny Lee – Epson Malaysia Sdn  Bhd
Mr. Derrik Khoo – e-Genting Holdings Sdn Bhd
Mr. Sean Seah – Bimbit.com Sdn Bhd
